Forget Resolutions. What do you REALLY want in 2009?

It’s that time of year when many of us are prone to making New Years Resolutions to get or achieve something new or different. But do resolutions really work?

Success experts will tell you that for the most part those annual resolutions are simply an exercise in ‘wishful thinking’. In fact, resolutions are powerless because the individual making the resolution often lacks true intention and commitment to MAKE IT HAPPEN! Thus, I refer to these statements as ‘good ideas’ and nothing more. Simply stated, resolutions lack ‘resolve’.

How often do adults with ADHD make false promises? It’s probably safe to say that ADD’ers mean well but are frequently side-tracked when it comes time to carry the thought or promise into deliberate action. Furthermore, our ADHD behavioral tendencies of forgetfulness, procrastination, disorganization and distractibility often contribute to our breakdowns with success and accomplishment. In time, the person on the receiving end of the empty promises begins to doubt our true intention and reliability. Isn’t this true?

The end of any year is a great time to review your past year. It’s a good time to examine what was working and not working that created the results you got in 2008. This is also a wonderful time to look into your future and design a vision of how and where you’d like to see yourself at the end of ’2009′.

Would you like to create some rock solid success results in 2009? Consider the following steps:

  • First, get crystal clear of what you REALLY want (to create) for your life. I’m not talking about a good idea. I’m talking about something that you REALLY want. Something that gets you real excited and gets your juices flowing when you think about having it or achieving it.
  • Second, sit down and write a single page description about how your life will benefit, how will it be different as a result of having or achieving this (what you want). Be very descriptive and write it with emotion and excitement. Write it descriptively as if you are watching a movie play out before your eyes. The more emotion you evoke the more powerful this statement will be for you.
  • Next, define your timeline or due date for having or achieving your desired result. When coaching my clients, I like to know the ‘what’ by ‘when’. Tell me WHAT you intend to do, by WHEN. Without this step even great ideas remain simply ‘good ideas’. This is your means of measuring your progress and allows you to make adjustments as needed.
  • Finally, there is a tendency for adults with ADHD to “Do it alone”, to be the “Lone Ranger”. All highly successful people have someone else or others to support them. Identify an ‘Accountability Buddy’ – someone who will support you during your successes and breakdowns. Most important is your willingness to be 100% transparent and accountable to your ‘Accountability Buddy’. Again, successful people do not live in isolation.

The New Look, Now In Motion

For weeks I have been promising a ‘new look’ to this blogsite. I can now tell you that changes are in process.

When you now login to www.adhdcenterforsuccess.com you will arrive at my new landing site that will soon become my new website! Simply CLICK on the link to be redirected to this blogsite.

I have hired Tom, a TOP GUN web guru with knowledge of website and blogsite development and more importantly site ‘optimization’ to insure more site traffic.  The new website will be completed in January 2009 (just around the corner).

You may not notice the changes to this blogsite, but believe me, Tom has been very busy making several changes to the background of this site (which was an ‘html’ mess and I had no idea). Everything should run much more smoothly. There are also more obvious changes coming…

Finally, those of you registered to receive the ‘ADHD Success Newsletter’ should have received an email from me announcing my intentions to change my newsletter distributor. It turns out that several of my readers were not receiving the newsletter. I have returned to my former email newsletter distributor “Aweber” and you will receive the next newsletter issue in the next few days. The look may look different but much more effective so more of you will actually receive the “ADHD Successs Newsletter”.

I want to thank you for your patience during these changes.

Tips for ADHD Stress-Free Holidays

Why not plan to have a stress-free holiday season this year? Notice that the operative word is – ‘plan’. Face it, the holiday season can be a stressful season for most everyone. For adults with ADHD, procrastination, poor planning and poor focus can easily add to a stressful holiday.

The source of holiday stress is often the very components that make up the holiday season – shopping, wrapping and mailing holiday cards. How many unopened boxes of holiday cards do you have that were purchased but never sent because your disorganization would cause them to arrive after the holiday?

Here are a few tips you may find helpful:

  1. Start with a plan. Make a list of everything you need to do or accomplish during the holiday season, i.e. holiday cards, gift shopping, etc. Hint: Start your planning early.
  2. Use a planning calendar. Enter your holiday To Do list on a calendar. Enter important due dates with ‘reverse planning’. For instance, iIf your cards are mailed on (date), then they need to be personally addressed by (date), and cards need to be purchased by (date). Hint: Always add more time than necessary with your timeline.
  3. Prioritize your projects. Review your list and mark all your ‘most important and most urgent’ tasks with an ‘A’. Mark your ‘important but not urgent’ tasks with a ‘B’. Mark everything else on your list with a ‘C’. Now, begin focus on your ‘A’ list by prioritizing this list from 1-10; #1 being the ‘most important and most urgent’ task. Start working on #A-1. Hint: This is a good time to start purging your list by deleting all unnecessary and/or over-ambitious tasks.
  4. Review your list(s) daily and monitor your progress. Be gentle with yourself if you find yourself falling behind. Re-prioritize your list and adjust your timeline as necessary to insure the most important tasks get completed first. Accept that some less important tasks may be eliminated from your list.
  5. Give to yourself. The holidays are about giving so remember to give to yourself as well. Give yourself acknowledgement for what you ‘were’ able to accomplish this year. Celebrate your successes!
  6. What worked? Accept what you didn’t accomplish this year and review your entire planning process. What worked and didn’t work this year? Save this information on your computer in a “Holiday 2008″ file. This may be valuable information for your 2009 planning.
  7. Have fun!

Here are a few dates to add to your planning calendar:

  • Deadline for homemade gifts
  • Shipping deadlines to allow your gifts to arrive at their destination on time
  • Postal deadline to mail your holiday cards
  • Party dates, start time, what to bring and directions
  • Departure dates if traveling (date to start packing, packing list)
