Listener Comment & Shared Resources

Comments from a listener of the WCQS Radio show last night. The listener also
shared some helpful resources regarding ADHD.  Thank you to ‘RD’

Comments & Resources -

Listened to Evening Rounds last night and had a couple of resources I’ve
found useful.

I have almost no tolerance for self help books but the 2 new books by Ari
Tuckman seem to be well researched and current. One is geared toward
clinicians and the other toward ADD patients.

“Integrative Treatment for Adult ADHD” for clinicians but I found it interesting.

“More Attention, Less Deficit: Success Strategies for Adults with ADHD”  This
one is fairly common sense stuff but it is designed to be read in small bits and
in any order so it works well for those of us who don’t focus well.

Many of the articles and sections of these are both available in pdf form on
his website.  I took the medication summary to my Dr. with me just for reference.

There is also a research study published as “ADHD in Adults: What the Science
Says” by Russell Barkley.  They track a group of Adults diagnosed as children
and a group of clinically referred (adult diagnosis).  It’s a large series of research methods and findings so not super ADD friendly but might prove interesting to
you.

Thanks for helping get the issue out there and debunk the “myth” status it has.

Study Shows Boring Tasks Difficult for Adults with ADHD

Should it be a surprise to anyone that adults with ADD struggle with ‘boring’ tasks? It appears there is now evidence based research to address this issue.

Adults with ADHD have long stated they have a difficult time paying attention to and completing boring tasks. One recent study may have backed up that claim with scientific data.

The study was completed at the National Institute on Drug Abuse by Nora D. Volkow M.D. and her colleagues. A preliminary report of the study was reported in the September 2, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

How ADHD Symptoms Manifest in Adults

In the spirit of ADD Awareness, it’s helpful to increase the awareness and understanding of ADD/ADHD and how it manifests in adults.

Many people are already aware of ADD/ADHD in children but are often surprised that adults may experience ADD/ADHD as well. More to the point, it is important to understand how ADD/ ADHD can present differently in adults as compared with the more familiar childhood presentation.

I wanted to share an informative article written by one of my colleagues, Eileen Bailey. You can read this article: “How ADHD Symptoms Manifest in Adults” and other articles she has published in www.healthcentral.com/adhd.
