    From a sense of humor to a sense of happiness and from“high-arousal” words to “untranslatables,” culture dictates how we speak about and experience the universe, far more than we realize.

    In Armenia, joy is loud and colorful. From my childhood, I remember my grandmother when she was happy. Whenever joy lingered for too long—on holy days and birthdays—her fingers pinched me, knocked on wood, and clasped in wishful prayer. As I grew older, I recognized grandma’s trepidation toward joy.
